Groundhogs day first began in Germany where farmers would rely on the small creatures and animals to determine the weather and the length of winter. They mainly relied on badgers but becaues of the lack of badgers in the US they decided to sustitute it with groundhogs…otherwise it would have been called Badgers Day.
